Commedia del Arte Fabrics: A Romantic Autumn with Lelio

20 November, 2024

Our new fabric collection, inspired by the characters of the Italian Commedia dell’arte, includes options with a colour palette suited to every season. As autumn arrives, the Lelio fabric in shades of blue, ochre, and brown is ideal for bringing a cheerful yet romantic touch to all upholstered pieces in our catalog.

Lelio was one of the recurring characters in the Commedia dell’arte, belonging to the group of lovers. His romantic and love-struck nature inspired the design and shades of this fabric, with its expressive pattern and blend of blue, ochre, and brown, evoking that in-between season when the skies remain clear and bright after summer, leading into winter with landscapes carpeted by fallen leaves.

The pattern in our Commedia del Arte fabric collection is printed in high-definition digital format, allowing for fine precision in the contrasting geometric shapes and the visual play of typography created through blocks of text that also simulate geometric forms. Together, they form a digital trompe l’oeil effect, reminiscent of the multi-coloured geometric scraps once used to make harlequin costumes.

Designed by our Diabla studio in collaboration with a musicologist, the Commedia del Arte fabric collection includes variations in colour palettes inspired by other classic characters of this Italian theatre, such as Harlequin, Colombina, Pierrot, Pantaleone, and Tartaglia.

These fabrics bring a playful, expressive, and colourful touch to our designs and can also be combined with solid colours from the Diabla Outdoor fabric collection, alternating both options within a single composition.

Since all the fabrics in our collections are removable, they can be easily swapped from season to season: a more vibrant style like Pantaleone or Pierrot for summer; soft, powdery tones for spring, such as Colombina; or a deep green for winter, like Tartaglia.

The fabrics in our Commedia del Arte collection are specially made for outdoor use, though they are also suitable for indoor settings. They can be used with designs such as the Costuras poufs by Teresa Sapey + Partners; or the Sail and Mareta casual seating, designed by Héctor Serrano (National Design Award 2024); the Valentina Up collection and Patoso seat by Gandía Blasco Group’s creative director, Alejandra Gandía-Blasco Lloret; and the Arp, Lilly, and Grill collections by Made Studio, Democràcia Estudio, and Mut Design, respectively. They are also available for our full range of Diabla Outdoor cushions.
