Diabla Spaces: Kings Theatre
24 July, 2024Diabla delves into the golden years of cinema to revive its valuable architectural heritage. Between fantasy and emotion, we experience a journey through dreamlike temples, accompanied by vibrant social life surrounding film premieres and screenings.
The Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, opened in 1929 with spectacular architecture and opulent interiors inspired by French classicism. If anything represents the height of glamour and luxury, it is undoubtedly this theatre-turned-cinema. Today, it has become a recovered jewel despite its long closure. Surviving to the present day, it now offers a contemporary program that includes everything from concerts to fashion shows.
In this epicentre of New York glamour, we have landed with an inspiring proposal designed to make the most of such a unique place, where any social gathering can take place. As we at Diabla love discovering new territories, how could we not extend the architectural appeal and powerful convening capacity of the Kings Theatre to its exteriors?
Against the backdrop of its imposing façade and entrance area, Diabla’s more casual seating unfolds to create different types of relaxed and adaptable atmospheres. The SAIL poufs, the VALENTINA UP hammocks and seats, and the CLIP armchairs take over the street, creating urban relaxation spaces for individual rest or collective leisure. These spaces are designed for meetings, whether before, during, or after each performance, and at any other time of the day.
For this particular street performance, the beanbag-style SAIL poufs, designed by Héctor Serrano, and the VALENTINA UP loungers and seats, designed by Alejandra Gandía-Blasco, are dressed for the occasion with Diabla’s fabrics inspired by the characters Harlequin and Pierrot from the Italian commedia dell’arte.
Mixed with the low CLIP armchairs, designed by José A. Gandía-Blasco, we have achieved the casual and easily reconfigurable touch we were looking for. All of this is spiced up with a refreshing touch of green from the large GOBI planters, designed by Pablo Gironés, and the warm nocturnal atmosphere provided by our portable PLISY lamp, designed by Alejandra Gandía-Blasco.
